Abstract

The late 1800’s was a time where the very existence of Native Americans was being threatened. The ever-expanding American frontier led to the forcible relocation of thousands, the eradication of millions of buffalo, and the destruction of native culture. During this time of grotesque hardship, Native Americans turned their focus toward two visionary prophets of the Nevada Paiute Indians. The Ghost Dance, developed by the Paiute leader Wovoka, became the center of a religious revival that sought to inspire hope that the destruction of native culture by the white settler would one day be restored.
